Surround sound/home theatre wiring question?

It is possible to splice the wiring for a SS/HT system? I ask because we just moved into a house where the wiring is running alond the wall, behind it, and when the previous owners moved out they just cut the wiring from the speakers that they had. So I want to get speakers, but how would I hook it up to the wiring that is already there? Is it possible?
